Don't forget to file your self assessment tax return

HMRC has urged taxpayers to file their self assessment tax returns early.

Self assessment taxpayers need to complete their tax return and pay any tax owed by the 31 January 2024 deadline or risk having to pay a penalty.

Those who file their return before 30 December may also have the option of paying any tax owed through their PAYE tax code.

On Christmas Day 2022 3,275 people filed their tax returns online. HMRC is reminding people to get their 2022/2023 self assessment tax return wrapped up early so they can make the most of the festive season.

Filing early means if taxpayers owe money, they have plenty of time to decide which of the payment options available is best for them by visiting GOV.UK. Customers should include their bank account details so that if HMRC needs to repay them it can be done quickly and securely.

Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC's Director General for Customer Services, said: 'Using our online services for simple queries about your tax return means you can get the help you need quickly. We have a wealth of free resources and support online to help you complete your tax return. Search 'help with self assessment' on GOV.UK to find out more.'
